TRIdent 18,   Flats Fishing Configuration

The TRIdent 18 is designed for fishing, day cruises, and sport use.  An enclosed steering station is one popular option, but other interior arrangements are possible.  A  step down well, formed by the center hull, allows for 6'2" headroom in the enclosed version.   A dry storage area is located in the forward portion of the center hull.  The side hulls are foam filled to the level of the self draining cockpit sole.  Above the sole, the outer hulls contain fuel and general storage areas.  The boat weighs 2000 pounds empty and 3000 pounds loaded.  Recommended power is a single outboard, ranging from 45 to 100 hp, which will result in speeds of 20 - 30 knots.  Construction is a blend of wood strips and plywood, with all exposed surfaces glassed.

Prototype TRIdent 12 Now Under Construction

Current status:  The building forms have been cut out using a high precision water jet cutter and assembled.  The hull has been stripped and glassing started.

A 1/6 scale model was first cut out using the water jet to avoid any "surprises".  The model faired perfectly, and was used as a plug for laying up a hull mold.  Several model hulls have been built for flotation verification and deck design studies.  One hull was fitted with a 1.1 hp gasoline engine and radio controlled throttle and rudder.   The powered model performed very well, slicing through chop and turning extremely quickly.  It appears that the center hull acts like a pivot point, allowing the boat turn 180 degrees in about 3 boat lengths at full throttle.

The model is similar enough to the larger designs to allow for mockup interiors, deck, and cabin variations.  A basic hull molding   is priced at $40, plus shipping.  Click here for pictures of the prototype TRIdent 12.
